Generation Touch

I had to read  Forget X, Y and Z – a new generation touches down by Nathan Mawby in the Herald Sun for this unit.

Initially I thought Generation Touch was a bit of a strange name but after thinking about it over a few days and watching my son interact with my iPhone and the family iPad. It makes so much sense!

Xavier is 8 months old and already understands how to operate some apps. We have a folder dedicated to apps for him on our iPhones and iPad. An example of one app that he plays with a lot is called Moobaa. Moobaa is an interactive children’s book designed for kids aged 8 months plus.

There are only 2 movements required to use this app. Touch the screen and the animal that is on the screen with make noises then slide your finger across the screen to change animals. I initially thought this would be too difficult for him to understand. As children like to do he proved me wrong. He has been playing with this app since he was about 6 months old.

By the time Xavier starts school in 2016 will computer screens as we know them now be completely gone? Will computer screens and tablets be touch screen only?
